Forthcoming Courses for the Catholic Studies at a Distance Program

Fall 2007/Spring 2008

A History of the Catholic Church Parts I & II

To understand our world today, we must also understand the Catholic Church's role in shaping the past.  From politics to the fine arts, and from benevolence to warfare, the Church has left a substantial impression on the world's historical landscape.  This course introduces students to the Church's rich, complicated, and fascinating history.  Topics include: the founding of the Church, the Church Councils, the Great Schism, the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation, the Enlightenment, Americanism, Catholic Social Teaching, Vatican II, and Globalization.

This course will be broken into two parts. The fall 2007 course will cover topics through the Reformation. The spring 2008 course will move through the contemporary era. Combined, the courses will surveys two thousand years of history in twenty weeks, so we will not cover everything.  Nevertheless, those completing the courses will have the foundation to begin a lifelong journey toward understanding the Church's heritage.
